Idiopathic Scoliosis

Idiopathic Scoliosis is a spinal condition whose etiology remains elusive. It is characterised by a lateral curvature of the spine that usually manifests during adolescence, affecting both genders but with a higher prevalence in females. Approximately 2-3% of Australia’s population is afflicted with this ailment.

Clinicians assess the severity of scoliosis using a radiographic parameter known as the Cobb angle. This measurement determines the degree of lateral curvature by calculating the angle between the most inclined vertebrae at the top and bottom of the curve. The result will be classified as mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the angle measurement. A higher Cobb angle indicates a more severe curvature.

At Ivins Chiropractic, we take a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and managing patients with idiopathic scoliosis. Our diagnostic workup includes a thorough medical history, physical examination, and advanced imaging modalities such as X-rays, MRI, EOS, or CT scans. This enables us to evaluate the severity of the scoliosis, identify any underlying causes, and establish the most appropriate treatment plan.

Our management strategy is tailored to each patient's specific needs based on factors such as age, skeletal maturity, Cobb angle, overall health status, and potential for further progression. We prioritise evidence-based practices and offer the most effective and current treatments available. Our management approach encompasses a combination of chiropractic adjustments, corrective exercises, and other therapeutic modalities.

Our ultimate goal is to ameliorate pain, optimize spinal alignment, enhance overall function, and prevent further progression of scoliosis. We believe in empowering our patients by educating them about their condition and the importance of self-care. Thus, we work closely with our patients to monitor their progress and adjust their treatment plan accordingly.

In conclusion, idiopathic scoliosis is a challenging condition that requires a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and management. At Ivins Chiropractic, we take a patient-centred approach to care and prioritize evidence-based practices to offer the most effective and current treatments available. Our goal is to improve our patients' overall quality of life by managing their condition effectively and promoting self-care.
