A note to our patients about recent commentary on chiropractic care (25 Aug 2025)

Many of you have asked about a recent news item discussing what chiropractic can and can’t help, warning against exaggerated claims, aggressive sales tactics, and risky neck treatments without proper assessment (News.com.au).

The short version: I agree with much of its core message - and this is precisely how we already practice at Ivins Chiropractic.

WHERE WE AGREE

Appropriate scope. Chiropractic is most useful for common neuromusculoskeletal problems, lower back pain, neck pain, and headache types, when care is well-reasoned, clinically indicated, and part of a broader health plan. If your presentation falls outside our scope, I refer to the right provider. This is spelled out in our patient information and initial-consult process.

Assessment first, treatment second. The article stresses that an adjustment, especially of the neck, should never be done without careful screening. My first consult is a full clinical work-up: comprehensive medical history; vitals (BP, pulse, temperature, weight); posture and functional testing; orthopaedic and neurological exams; review of blood tests, medications, prior imaging and doppler studies if indicated. New imaging is ordered only when clinically indicated. That is our standard operating procedure, not an exception.

Team-based, evidence-based care. My clinic is registered for My Health Record access, and we coordinate with your GP/specialists, so you receive integrated care. When red flags or non-MSK drivers are suspected, I investigate further or refer promptly.

What we do differently from the “red flags” you may have read about

  • No exaggerated claims. I don’t advertise miracle cures or promise results that aren’t evidence-supported. Our “About Us” page details my training and my conservative, clinical decision-making model.

  • No high-pressure selling. You’ll see transparent per-visit fees and clinical recommendations tailored to your presentation, no lock-in contracts or prepaid “packages.” (Our patient info outlines individualised planning based on examination findings and progress).

Neck care with risk controls. Cervical techniques are selected case-by-case after screening. If your history/exam suggests vascular, neurological, or other non-mechanical drivers, we do not proceed with adjustments before establishing a clinical baseline and/or coordinating appropriate medical referral. That’s embedded in our intake pathway.

WHO IS TREATING YOU, AND HOW?

I am a Macquarie-trained chiropractor (BSc, MChiro) with radiographic licensing (spine and extremities). I have served as lecturer, clinic supervisor, and competency examiner at Macquarie University’s Centre for Chiropractic.

In addition, I hold the International Chiropractic Sports Science Diploma (ICSSD) - a postgraduate qualification awarded through the Fédération Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport (FICS). This advanced program is designed for chiropractors who undertake specialist training in sports medicine, injury management, rehabilitation, and performance care.

The ICSSD has provided me with the qualifications to be recognised as a registered practitioner with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This means I am credentialed to work within multidisciplinary medical teams at the highest level of international sport, bringing that same standard of care and clinical governance into my practice here in Ivins Chiropractic.

I am also in the final stages of completing a Master of Science in Medicine at The University of Sydney, with a further resuscitation of my previous Doctorate research into cardiac pain. This advanced academic work enriches my clinical reasoning and ensures your care is informed by the latest medical science.

Importantly, Ivins Chiropractic is recognised as a health provider site for medical students from The University of Sydney to attend and observe the work of health professionals. This recognition reflects our standing as a trusted clinical environment committed to education, collaboration, and high standards of care.

WHAT PATIENTS SAY ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE HERE

Independent reviews reflect strong patient satisfaction for Ivins Chiropractic, reflecting themes you’ll recognise in our consult rooms - thorough assessment, clear explanations, gentle but effective techniques, and meaningful functional and quality of life improvement.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST VISIT

You’ll receive a clear diagnosis (or working diagnosis), a discussion of risks/benefits and alternatives, and measurable goals. We set an empirical baseline (history, exam findings, and, where relevant, validated self-reported inventories) so you and I can track change over time - improvements in pain, function, sleep, or activity tolerance should be demonstrable, not assumed.

BOTTOM LINE

If you’ve read cautionary advice in the media, know that our clinic already operates to those standards: evidence-based, assessment-led, safety-first, and within scope - while collaborating with your GP and specialists. If something isn’t appropriate for chiropractic, I’ll say so and help you get to the right place.

If you have questions about whether your condition is suitable for care here - or you want a second opinion - please book an initial assessment. I will review your history, examine carefully, and decide together on the safest, most effective next step.

With kind regards,

Dr Kevin Ivins
